A: Some towns allow abandonment in place, by the filling the tank with sand and cleaning.

A: Most residential home heating oil tanks that have not leaked may be removed or decommissioned in place. The cost difference of either of these options is minimal. The need for removal can then be determined. Our experts will help you to understand your options.

Q: Should we abandon in place or remove?
A: Advantage:

First, the main benefit of removal is that the tank is gone and never needs to be discussed again. Secondly, the tank integrity is immediately apparent. The soil is easily inspected and a soil test for additional proof of cleanliness is available at a small additional cost. Finally, if are selling your home or may list in the future most potential buyers will not be able to get a mortgage and or insurance if the tank was abandoned. Meaning you may have to remove the tank anyway and now you are paying for the job twice.

Disadvantage: Tank removal requires grounds disturbance.

Q: Is my underground home heating oil tank regulated?
A: State regulations do not govern home heating oil tanks that have not leaked. Some local jurisdictions may have requirements for home heating oil tanks. You should contact Core Environmental Services, LLC or your city or county officials to determine if there are any regulations that apply to your heating oil tanks. Ask your Core Environmental Services, LLC representative for all your options.
